Merlin Carothers (1924-2013, photo attached) was a Methodist pastor and American military chaplain. He recommends saying, when we are in a painful situation,: "Thank you, Lord. I trust in you. I am sure that you are present in this painful situation. You will bring good out of it, just as you brought good out of the crucifixion of Jesus: he is risen, and the 11 apostles have recovered their faith in him."
